Discovery of Blood Groups
- There are four blood groups: O, A, B and AB
- Blood type is based on antigens and antibodies
- An antigen is a protein that is present on your red blood cells
- The “Rh” factor determines whether your blood is “positive” or “negative”
- The “D” antigen on red blood cells denotes Rh Positive blood and the absence of the “D” antigen denotes Rh Negative blood
- 85% of Canadians are Rh Positive and 15% are Rh Negative
