Lesson 5- Dihybrid Crosses and Mendel's Second Law of Inheritance
Duration: 3 Days
Day 1
Hook: The link to the following website contains a two minute video clip that explains Mendel's Second Law of inheritance being the Law of Independent Assortment. It ends with a Punnett square of a dihybrid cross which can be used to commence an explanantion on dihyrid crosses.
Body: Explain the concept of Mendel's Law of Independent Assortment. Walk students through problem questions using dihybrid cross.

There is an online tutorial to teach the entire class if a laptop and projector is available that contains a brief explanation of the Law of Independent Assortment. It is also accompanied with an online quiz which can be used to survey student answers and anecdotal observations can be made to assess student learning.

Assessment: Assign practice problems for using dihybrid crosses which can be assigned from the textbook. There is an alternative link that students can use for additional help and questions.
Additional Teaching Resources on DiHybrid Crosses: In order to provide constant review of crosses, it is essential that students be exposed to as many problem questions as possible. The website link below allows students to practice additional questions by answering multiple choice questions on dihybrid crosses. Online quizzes are very helpful because they provide instant feedback for students.

Day 2
Hook: Take up questions assigned from previous day and have students volunteer to put their solutions on the board.
Body: Provide students with the handout below which contains an activity on dihybrid crosses. Allow a full class work period and circulate facilitating the students' work and answering any questions they may have.

Assessment: Provide students with genetic word problem worksheet that will be collected on the subsequent class and marked for evaluation. See Assessment and Evaluation tab for worksheet.

Day 3

Hook: Display preconstructed Reebops of mother and father phenotypes and advise students that they will be making these themselves by interpretating a genotype of their own Reebop.
Body: Students will be completing the Reebop assignment for the entire duration of the class (See below for PDF of activity).
Assessment: Students will have 1 week to complete formally answers to various assigned questions in the activity (upon the teacher's discretion) the questions that are associated with the assignment as well as their final Reebop creation.
